Romance
Romance films contain strong themes of love and sex and the traditional values that link with these; such as marriage, courtship and pregnancy. They usually focus on one couple who go through several trials to be together and usually prevail in the end. However, one of the most famous products of the romance genre is Shakespeare's, 'Romeo and Juliet', in which the couple do not prevail but end up dying. These types of films usually either depict someone looking for love and eventually finding it or show the troubles that a couple face whether in marriage or through disapproval of their relationship. Usual themes that threaten the protagonist's relationship are finances, illness, discrimination, psychological restraints, family that threaten to break their union of love, tensions, temptations and incompatibility. Most of these films seek to prove the idea of love yet there are some that stand to question it. This genre seeks to allow people to escape into a fantasy world where everything is as ideal as they wish it would be and there is almost always a happy ending. Usually these films revolve around traditional couples, however there are some romance films that feature same-sex couples.
Subgenres
There are four main subgenres of the romance genre, these are:
- Romantic Drama- This is the quintessential romantic film and is probably what everyone imagines when they first think of this genre. It places greater emphasis on sex and the figures of the lovers than subgenres such as rom-coms do. There is also less use here of the trusted confidant device. These films are typically more emotional and contain more dramatic incidents; the music used often reflects this well. The conclusion of a romantic drama typically does not indicate whether a marriage will take place or even if the couple will stay together. A good example of this is, 'The Bridges of Madison County'.
- Chick Flick- This is a term often associated with romance films as many are specifically targeted to a female audience. Although many romance films are targeted at women because they feature the central theme of romance, the chick flick doesn't necessarily contain this theme; there are some that just focus on a friendship between women which men would assumably not be interested in, hence the term. But there are a great deal of chick flicks that contain romantic themes, such as, 'Dirty Dancing' or 'Dear John'.
- Romantic Comedies- These are usually light-hearted films with humorous plot-lines that contain ideals such as, love overcomes all obstacles. In these films the obstacles keeping the couple apart are usually humorous or odd. Humour in these films can include sexual humour, verbal, witty comedy or situational humour as opposed to comedy such as slapstick. Films in this genre include, 'Love Actually', 'When Harry Met Sally' or 'The Holiday'.
- Romantic Thriller- A genre of film that contains a storyline which combines elements of the romance and thriller genre. These films usually revolve around dangerous or eerie circumstances that keep the couple apart. Films in this genre include, 'The Adjustment Bureau', 'Mr and Mrs Smith' or 'Wicker Park'.
- Romantic Epic- These are romance films done on a larger scale. They are usually set in a historical setting. The romance itself is usually portrayed in a counterpoint to war, conflict or political events in the background of the story. In these films, the romance and the main character's relationships are the centerpiece of the story, rather than a subplot. A good example of this type of film is, 'Gone With the Wind'.
Themes
Romantic films often explore the essential themes of love at first sight, young with older love, unrequited love, obsessive love, sentimental love, spiritual love, forbidden love, sexual and passionate love, sacrificial love, explosive and destructive love, and tragic love. Here are examples of films that contain some of these themes:
- Harold and Maude- Harold and Maude is about a young man forming a relationship with a much older woman; therefore it features the themes of young with older love and forbidden love as the boys family do not approve of the relationship. While this film is a romance, it also contains elements of dark comedy.
- Romeo + Juliet- A modern take on the Shakespeare novel; it tells the classic love story of two lovers forbidden to be together by their disapproving families. It features the themes of love at first sight, forbidden love, sexual and passionate love and tragic love due to the lovers both dying in the end.
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith- This is a film about a couple who keep secrets from each other that eventually tear them apart; however the film goes on to show how they are brought back together because they love each other and are both under threat. The film features elements of love at first sight, sexual and passionate love and explosive and destructive love.
