Independent Distributors Research

Our film is low budget and therefore we have to research what distributor we would possible use. They would have to be independent, in-keeping with budget and possible have distributed similar films or films of that genre. I search for UK independent film distributors and generated this list. Then I researched their archives and what films they have distributed to see if they are relevant, in particular their involvement with short films.

  • Dogwoof - known for social issues and documentaries.
  • Left Film Distributors - known for horro, sci-fi, action and comedy films.
  • Diffusion Pictures - claim to not be defined by genre, just quality films.
  • Entertainment Film Distributors - known for several high budget films, such as Lord of the Rings.
  • Metrodome Distrubutors -
  • Vertigo -

Dogwoof specialises in documentaries in particular focusing on social issues like poverty. They have some cinema releases but also have a website which involves a feature called "Dogwoof TV" were you can rent and watch entire films, clips and trailers of their films. This would be idea for a film such as ours as a display to gain a fan base. But the company as a whole isn't well suited to us. Our genre wouldn't be well suited.

Left Film Distributors

Left Film specialises in horror and sci-fi films, for release to cinema, DVD and download. Through the website, it directs you to each films individual website where you can download the films and learn more about them. Again, the company isn't particularly for our genre, as the comedies are more ridiculous and spoof-like, rather than rom-coms.

Diffusion Pictures

Diffusion Distributors has a more indie feel, and claim to not be defined by genre, just quality. The films in their archives have retro style posters and most have several 4 or 5 star ratings from reputable reviews. Some have won awards in Film Festivals such as Toronto International. The films have a serious attitude and mood, unlike ours which is more fun and carefree. I doubt a company like this would consider a film like our own.

Entertainment Film Distributors

Entertainment Film have the most high budget films of these independent companies, and has a large variety of genres in their filmography.  The majority of films are released to cinema, then DVD and are feature length. I need to find a company more specific to short films with a low budget.

Metrodome Distribution covers a range of films and genres, including low budget British films such as "Shifty" by Warp Films. It has cinema releases but also a range of straight-to-video films. This kind of company would be ideal. Our film could be features on their website.

Vertigo Films are a similar company to Metrodome Distribution and have a huge variety of films in their filmography, such as childrens films, comedies, gritty drama's and horror. They also have an online archive to watch trailers and it features lots of advertisments, ideal for marketing and generating a fan base. People could see our advertisment if they are fans of one of their previous productions.
